Hi everyone,

Apologies for the lull in blog posts, but there's been a flurry of activity over the past few weeks and Stanley Halls is now thriving. It been amazing to meet so many new people, and introduce those to the Halls who were new to the building.

South Norwood Arts Festival

Picture
People for Portland Road got the South Norwood Arts Festival off to a great start with the Big Fair. The Halls were packed with members of the community of all ages enjoying the stalls, storytelling, craft fair, bouncy castle and ball pool! We had our busiest ever day, so many thanks to all our customers. By all accounts the whole fortnight festival was a great success - congratulations to all involved.

Stanley's Film Club

We'll be open beforehand with a menu of warming main meals and festive treats. Come and see us from 6:30pm up until the start of the film. Here's a sample of the evening menu:

South Norwood Regeneration

There is a £1.65m project to improve the street scene of South Norwood, and after Council consultation sessions earlier in the year draft plans have now been drawn up. They will be available for residents to view and comment on at a drop-in session on Saturday 5th December in Stanley Halls lower hall (entrance on the corner of Cumberlow Ave & South Norwood Hill), from 10am until 2pm. We will then be displaying the plans at Coffee Craft for a month for anyone who cannot attend. Here are a few sample images:

We are happy to announce our next 'Crafternoon Tea' session, which will take place on the evening of Thursday 1st October, from 6:30pm until 8:30pm. Come along to this creative and fun sewing workshop! Bring a couple of items of clothing you’d like to transform, and learn some alteration skills.

This is the perfect class for you if you have any items of clothing which you no longer like or that no longer fit you. The ones that sit in your wardrobe and you think "if only I could change a few details"; like take it in or let it out in a few places, shorten or lengthen it, change the sleeves or shape, etc!

Picture

This workshop is not suitable for complete beginners if your project involves using a sewing machine. You will need to have some basic sewing experience and know how to use a sewing machine. If you are a complete beginner you may still attend the class by taking up a project which only involves hand sewing and/or the use of an iron (e.g sewing on beads, sequins, ribbons, trimmings, buttons, hemming and simple tacking).

Picture

This class will be taught by Michelle and Jenny who have been sewing for years. Michelle is a trained dressmaker and has spent the last 8 years working in many different theatre wardrobe departments, altering costumes for actors on a daily basis. Jenny also has experience in altering costumes for theatre and has also worked in altering wedding and bridesmaids dresses.

Materials Required:

Bring along two items of clothing. We will provide all materials and equipment, but you’re welcome to bring along anything specific you might like to use in your project. If you have a sewing machine you'd prefer to bring and use, you are welcome to do so.

Class Duration: 2 hours

Class Size: Up to 8 people

Cost: £25, including a coffee/tea/soft drink of your choice and a piece of cake.

Date and times:

Thursday 1st October, 6:30-8:30pm

For further information or to book your place email [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you!

Coffee Craft is very excited to announce their first 'Crafternoon Tea' session - Classic Cusion Making with Michelle, on Sunday 9th August from 2pm-5pm.

This is a beginners class so no sewing experience is required  – we will show you how to cut and pin fabric, thread a machine and sew straight to required seam allowances. We'll also supply some written information to take home, along with your cushion.

Picture

We will provide you with fabric and materials including a cushion insert so you don’t need to bring anything with you. If you would like to bring your own fabric you are very welcome to, even an old t-shirt or trousers will do!

Maximum number in a class: 10
